Lugano is a city part of the Lugano district in the canton of Ticino.
The city lies on lake of Lugano and with the adjacent town of Pardiso occupies the entire bay of Lugano. The territory of the municipality encompasses a much larger region on both sides of the lake, with numerous isolated villages.
Lugano is an important stop on the international Gothard Railway. The rail brought a decisive contribution to the development of tourism and the tertiary sector which are predominant in the economy of the city.
Population
Lugano has a population of 62,315 (2021) and a urban agglomeration of over 150,000. It is the ninth largest city in Switzerland.
Natural parks
Known as “The Garden of Wonders”, the Scherrer Park in Morcote, built by Arturo Scherrer in 1930, in addition to the incomparable view of the lake offers various works of objects from all over the world.
City Life
For any shopping lover, the famous “Fox Town” outlet can be reached from Albergo Ristorante La Palma either by car or by train in just 15 minutes. With over 250 brands, it is the largest Factory Store in Southern Europe.
Arts and Culture
The new cultural center LAC Lugano is dedicated to the visual arts, with the permanent collection of the Swiss Italian Museum of Art and its many temporary installations, as well as to the performing arts like classical music, concerts, dance, musicals and theatrical performances.
Location
The municipality Lugano lies at the edge of Lake Lugano , which is situated between the lakes Lago Maggiore and Lago di Como , south of the Alps. Lugano is amongst the warmest places in Switzerland. Lugano has a rare temperate version of a humid subtropical climate for the latitude, with an average temperature of 22°C.
